  • HP and Oakley® collaboration fuels innovation to help revolutionize the sports performance design process and industry
  • HP technology enables rapid prototyping for multiple product lines within the Oakley portfolio
  • HP’s full color Jet Fusion 3D printing platform powers Oakley’s design-driven standards

Palo Alto, California (December 16, 2019): Today HP unveiled an expanded relationship with Oakley®, helping to advance the brand’s sports performance design process to meet the needs of the world’s best athletes. With HP’s Jet Fusion 3D printer, during the development stage, Oakley is reinventing how the brand prototypes and creates functional parts by leveraging the technology across Oakley’s portfolio of sports accessories, equipment and lifestyle products.

“World-class athletes around the globe depend on Oakley to compete at the highest level,” said Nicolas Garfias, Head of Design at Oakley. “With HP’s breakthrough 3D printing technology, we will not only accelerate our design to production timeline, but we will also reconceptualize the way our products are made, pushing the boundaries of sports performance to new heights.”

Disrupting the Sports Performance Industry for the World’s Best Athletes

Oakley is one of the leading product design and sport performance brands in the world with a culture of creators, inventors, idealists and scientists obsessed with using design and innovation to create products and experiences that inspire greatness.

Oakley has been ubiquitous in the sports industry for over 40 years – at the forefront of how performance products and technologies are developed and produced. In 1992, as early adopters, the brand first began integrating 3D printing into their design process, which transformed Oakley’s development process and the silhouette of their sunglasses. Knowing the value of 3D printing, Oakley has been leveraging HP technology as of 2018 for rapid prototyping across multi-product lines, including sunglasses, helmets and more.

“Oakley has the highest of design standards, and our innovative 3D printing technology helps them deliver on that experience for millions of athletes around the world,” said Jeff Fawcett, 3D Printing Product Management at HP Inc. “Together, we are transforming the sports performance community and changing the way the world designs and manufactures consumer products.”

HP 3D Printing and Prototyping Fuels Oakley’s Design Innovation

Oakley is demonstrating the power of digital manufacturing using HP’s Jet Fusion 580 platform to take a 2D sketch off the page and make a design model a reality, including the ability to:

  • Speed up the Design Iteration Process: Oakley designers can now see parts and conduct tests in just 24 hours
  • Utilize the Power of Color: Create rich detailed models by changing the color, breaking up the material in the model and then printing it in different colors to more clearly see different design iterations simultaneously
  • Test Functional Parts: Replicate the production process exactly during the development stage, as HP 3D High Reusability (HR)  CB PA 12is lightweight and durable
  • Leverage Build Volume: Create smaller and large prototypes at once
